En Túnez, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más se reportó en 20,1% en 2022, con una marcada diferencia según el género: el 39,7% de los hombres adultos y el 1,6% de las mujeres adultas eran fumadores actuales. Estos datos reflejan una leve disminución en la prevalencia global del tabaquismo respecto a 2020, cuando fue del 20,9%, y una reducción más notable en comparación con 2019, cuando la prevalencia alcanzaba el 22,4%. El número de personas fumadoras también descendió a lo largo de los años, pasando de 1.964.464 en 2019 a 1.802.752 en 2022. La mortalidad atribuida al consumo de tabaco sigue representando un problema importante de salud pública en Túnez; en 2021, estuvo detrás del 10,65% de todas las muertes, con una tasa de mortalidad específica por género del 15,28% en hombres y del 3,86% en mujeres. En cifras absolutas, se estima que el consumo de tabaco causó 11.047 muertes en 2021, de las cuales 9.421 correspondieron a hombres y 1.625 a mujeres. Estas estadísticas evidencian el reto persistente que representa el tabaco para la salud pública en Túnez, a pesar de las leves mejoras registradas en los últimos años.
