Smoking is legally allowed in Suriname and there certain restrictions around tobacco products. Cigarettes can be legally sold and purchased, including through online platforms, but not through vending machines. The minimum legal age for cigarette sales is 18 years. Cigarette are marketed with restrictions, and a total ban on tobacco advertising is in place. Also, health warnings on cigarette packaging are required. The import of cigarettes for trade is permitted, but there are legal restrictions on smoking in public places. Cigarettes in Suriname are subject to a total taxation rate of 49.28% with a specific excise tax of 40.06%. In 2024, an estimated 62,000 individuals were reported as current smokers in Suriname. In 2021, 332 deaths in Suriname were attributable to smoking. Of these, 250 were male deaths and 82 were female deaths. This indicates that smoking accounted for 6.19% of all deaths in the country, including 8.28% of male deaths and 3.5% of female deaths.
