Smoking is allowed in Romania with specific restrictions. The sale and import of cigarettes for trade are legal, and consumers can legally purchase them online. However, sales through vending machines are prohibited. Health warnings on packaging are mandatory and the minimum age for purchase is 18 years. There are also restrictions on smoking in public places. In terms of prevalence, the number of current smokers was estimated to be 4.1 million as of 2024. The adult current smoking prevalence was 26% in 2024, including 16.6% among women and 36.2% among men in 2024. Tobacco smoking was estimated to cause 29,500 deaths in 2021, including 6,200 female and 23,300 male deaths. This shows that smoking accounted for 8.82% of all deaths that year—3.87% among women and 13.38% among men.
