In Belize, smoking is allowed with specific restrictions. The sale of cigarettes is legal, and purchasing them online is also permitted. Imports for personal use are allowed with restrictions, and importing for trade purposes is legal with an import license. There is no comprehensive ban on advertising of smoking in Belize. There is no minimum legal age for purchasing cigarettes. However, health warnings on cigarette packaging are required, and cigarettes are subject to a total taxation rate of 34%.
In 2024, Belize had an estimated 25,000 current adult smokers, which corresponded to an adult current smoking prevalence of 8.5%. Among males, the smoking prevalence was 15%, and among females, it was 2.1%. According to data from 2017, the adult daily smoking prevalence was 16.4% among males and 2.1% among females. Data on mortality from smoking show that in 2021, tobacco smoking led to 106 deaths in Belize—83 among males and 23 among females. This indicates that smoking accounted for 4.5% of all deaths in the country in 2021, including 5.9% of male deaths and 2.4% of female deaths.
