In Angola, tobacco smoking and its health impact have been documented with significant data from recent years. According to the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 report, mortality due to tobacco smoking accounted for 3.2% of all deaths in the country in 2021. This includes 4.93% of deaths among males and 1.12% among females. The total number of deaths attributed to tobacco smoking in 2021 reached 7,988, with 6,725 deaths among males and 1,263 among females. In comparison, data from 2016 indicated a higher overall percentage of 4.28% of deaths attributed to tobacco smoking, with males and females accounting for 5.1% and 2.6%, respectively. In the same year, the total number of smoking-related deaths was recorded at 6,509, with 4,384 male deaths and 2,125 female deaths.
The total number of current smokers was estimated to be 2.7 million as of 2024. Regarding adult daily smoking prevalence, data from the Demographic and Health Survey 2015-16 reported 8.8% of males and 1% of females aged 15-49 engaged in daily smoking. This information provides a comprehensive view of the health burden from smoking in Angola, highlighting the need for targeted public health interventions to reduce smoking prevalence and its associated impacts.
