In April 2019, the FDA granted a premarket tobacco product application (PMTA) for the IQOS system, allowing it to be marketed in the U.S. This authorization was based on a comprehensive review of scientific evidence submitted by Philip Morris International.Following the FDA's authorization, IQOS was introduced to the U.S. market later in 2019. The initial rollout began in select locations, starting with Atlanta, Georgia. In July 2020, the FDA granted IQOS an Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) Authorization, allowing it to be marketed with claims that it reduces exposure to harmful chemicals compared to conventional cigarettes. This marked a significant milestone for HTPs in the U.S. regulatory landscape.
