Parts of the Model

  1. Lid An injection-moulded polypropylene lid. It closes the can again after each use.
  2. Can The injection-moulded polypropylene can that holds the unused pouches.
  3. Tamper-Evident Seal A thin adhesive strip wrapped over the joint between the lid and the can. It breaks or peels away when the can is first opened, so an intact seal shows that the can is unopened.
  4. Pouch A measured amount of nicotine filling sealed in fleece, with no tobacco leaf. Nicotine pouches come in dry and moist versions.
  5. Fleece A nonwoven fabric of cellulose fibres such as viscose, which lets saliva through. Here it is formed into a tube around the filling, seamed along the back and sealed at both ends.
  6. Filling Plant-based fillers such as microcrystalline cellulose with added nicotine, water and pH regulators such as sodium carbonate, plus humectants, sweeteners and flavourings depending on the recipe. The nicotine is either extracted from tobacco or synthetic.

Nicotine pouches are thumbnail-sized sachets containing vegetable fibres infused with nicotine and a range of flavours. Placed in the mouth between the lip and gum, nicotine is absorbed through the oral mucous membrane.

Nicotine pouches were first produced in the early 2000s. Due to their similar appearance and method of use, nicotine pouches are sometimes confused with Swedish snus that is placed between the lip and gum. But while Swedish snus contains tobacco, nicotine pouches do not contain any raw or processed tobacco leaves. The nicotine used in pouches may be synthetic, or extracted from tobacco plants.

If fully realised, tobacco harm reduction has the potential to rapidly reduce the global number of smokers. This would deliver one of the greatest public health gains of the 21st century.
