Łączna liczba palaczy w 2022 roku wyniosła około 642 450 osób, co oznacza wzrost w porównaniu z 579 513 osobami odnotowanymi w 2020 roku. Dla porównania, w 2017 roku codzienne palenie wśród dorosłych wynosiło 22,2%, w tym 40,6% wśród mężczyzn i 4,4% wśród kobiet. Azja jest również domem dla dziewięciu na dziesięciu użytkowników tytoniu bezdymnego (SLT), co prowadzi do wysokiej zachorowalności na raka jamy ustnej. W wielu krajach zdrowie publiczne jest poważnie zagrożone, ponieważ rządy kontrolują krajowe firmy tytoniowe lub mają w nich znaczące udziały. Potrzebne są nowe rozwiązania, aby przeciwdziałać zagrożeniu dla zdrowia publicznego wynikającemu z palenia i używania tytoniu - jednak bezpieczniejsze produkty nikotynowe są zakazane w wielu krajach.
