En Mongolia, en 2022, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más se reportó en 28.3%, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros: el 51% de los hombres y el 6.7% de las mujeres eran fumadores. Esto representa un aumento en comparación con 2020, cuando la prevalencia entre hombres fue de 47.1% y entre mujeres de 6.4%. El número total de personas fumadoras en 2022 se estimó en aproximadamente 642,450, lo que refleja un incremento respecto a las 579,513 personas contabilizadas en 2020. Como referencia, la prevalencia diaria de consumo de tabaco en adultos en 2017 fue de 22.2%, con una prevalencia de 40.6% en hombres y 4.4% en mujeres. Los datos de mortalidad atribuible al tabaquismo de 2021 indican que se registraron 2,691 muertes asociadas al consumo de tabaco, de las cuales 2,294 correspondieron a hombres y 397 a mujeres. Esto significa que las muertes relacionadas con el tabaquismo representaron el 12.51% del total de fallecimientos en el país, con un mayor impacto en hombres (17.72%) en comparación con las mujeres (4.64%). Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el importante reto de salud pública que representa el tabaquismo en Mongolia, lo que exige una vigilancia constante y la implementación de medidas regulatorias para abordar esta problemática.

El enfoque de este informe de GSTHR es Asia. El sesenta por ciento de los fumadores del mundo vive en esta región y aquí se produce casi la mitad de las muertes mundiales por fumar. Asia también alberga a nueve de cada diez consumidores de tabaco sin combustión (SLT), lo que provoca altas tasas de cáncer oral. En varios países, la salud pública se ve gravemente socavada cuando los gobiernos controlan o tienen una participación significativa en empresas tabacaleras nacionales. Se necesitan nuevas soluciones para abordar la amenaza para la salud pública que suponen fumar y el consumo de tabaco, pero los productos de nicotina más seguros están prohibidos en muchos países. ¿Mejoraría la reducción de daños del tabaco la salud pública en Asia?
