W Afganistanie według szacunków dla 2022 roku było około 2 135 588 osób palących tytoń w wieku 15 lat i starszych. Odsetek dorosłych palaczy wynosił 9,2%, przy znaczącej różnicy między płciami: 16,6% wśród mężczyzn i 1,8% wśród kobiet. Oznacza to spadek w porównaniu do lat poprzednich, ponieważ w 2020 roku rozpowszechnienie palenia wśród mężczyzn wynosiło 17,7%, a wśród kobiet 2,1%. W 2019 roku odsetek dorosłych codziennych palaczy tytoniu wynosił 7,6%, przy czym 12,6% stanowili mężczyźni, a 2,2% kobiety. W 2021 roku ogólna liczba zgonów przypisywanych paleniu tytoniu wyniosła 9 151, z czego 6 555 dotyczyło mężczyzn, a 2 596 kobiet. Zgony spowodowane paleniem tytoniu stanowiły więc 3,36% wszystkich zgonów w kraju, przy czym wśród mężczyzn wskaźnik ten wynosił 4,27%, a wśród kobiet 2,18%. Dane te podkreślają, że palenie tytoniu nadal stanowi poważne wyzwanie dla zdrowia publicznego w Afganistanie i wskazują na konieczność kontynuowania oraz wzmacniania działań mających na celu ograniczenie zachorowań i zgonów związanych z paleniem.
