El tabaco tradicional sin humo está prohibido en Tanzania. Se regula como un producto de tabaco, pero su venta es ilegal y existe una prohibición total de toda forma de publicidad de tabaco. Sin embargo, a pesar de la prohibición, en 2018 se estimaba que en Tanzania había 2.0 millones de consumidores actuales de tabaco tradicional sin humo, lo que representaba el 6.5% de la población adulta. Su consumo era considerablemente mayor entre los hombres, con un 12.8% que declaró ser consumidor actual, en comparación con solo un 0.7% de las mujeres. El uso diario fue reportado por el 4.8% de los adultos en general, incluyendo un 9.4% de los hombres y un 0.5% de las mujeres.
