La prevalencia de consumo de tabaco entre mujeres adultas en Tayikistán fue del 0,5% en 2017. En 2021, el consumo de tabaco fue responsable de aproximadamente 3.500 muertes en el país, de las cuales 2.900 correspondieron a hombres y 657 a mujeres. Esto indica que el tabaquismo representó el 5,99% de todas las muertes anuales a nivel nacional, incluyendo el 8,39% de las muertes masculinas y el 2,66% de las femeninas en 2021. En cuanto a la normativa, fumar está legalmente permitido en Tayikistán y el cigarrillo se regula como producto de tabaco. Por lo tanto, la venta, compra y consumo de estos productos son legales. Sin embargo, no está permitido comprar cigarrillos en máquinas expendedoras ni por internet. La venta solo está autorizada a personas mayores de 18 años. Los cigarrillos pueden importarse legalmente tanto para uso personal como para comercio, aunque con ciertas restricciones. El empaque debe incluir advertencias sanitarias. Además, fumar está restringido en algunos espacios públicos según la normativa nacional. A los cigarrillos se les aplica una tasa general de impuestos del 59%.

Reducción de daños del tabaco: un problema candente para Asia

El enfoque de este informe de GSTHR es Asia. El sesenta por ciento de los fumadores del mundo vive en esta región y aquí se produce casi la mitad de las muertes mundiales por fumar. Asia también alberga a nueve de cada diez consumidores de tabaco sin combustión (SLT), lo que provoca altas tasas de cáncer oral. En varios países, la salud pública se ve gravemente socavada cuando los gobiernos controlan o tienen una participación significativa en empresas tabacaleras nacionales. Se necesitan nuevas soluciones para abordar la amenaza para la salud pública que suponen fumar y el consumo de tabaco, pero los productos de nicotina más seguros están prohibidos en muchos países. ¿Mejoraría la reducción de daños del tabaco la salud pública en Asia? Y, de ser así, ¿cuáles son los obstáculos que se interponen en su camino?
