En Chad, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más muestra tendencias destacables. En 2022, la prevalencia cruda estimada de consumo de tabaco entre los hombres fue de 12.3%, mientras que entre las mujeres fue considerablemente menor, situándose en 1.4%. La prevalencia general entre adultos ese mismo año fue de 6.8%. En comparación, en 2020 la prevalencia entre los hombres era de 11.1% y entre las mujeres, de 1.4%, con una prevalencia total de 6.2%. Estos datos indican un ligero aumento en las tasas de consumo de tabaco entre los hombres durante el periodo de dos años. El número absoluto de personas fumadoras en 2022 se estimó en aproximadamente 611,604, un incremento frente a los 520,330 fumadores reportados en 2020. Esto refleja una tendencia creciente en el consumo de tabaco en el país. Como referencia, en 2017 la prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco entre adultos era de 7.5%, con una prevalencia de 13.2% en hombres y 2.1% en mujeres. Los datos sobre mortalidad atribuible al tabaco correspondientes a 2021 muestran que el 2.48% de todas las muertes en hombres y el 0.95% en mujeres se debieron al consumo de tabaco, registrándose un total de 3,296 fallecimientos relacionados con este hábito. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el importante desafío en materia de salud pública que representa el consumo de tabaco en Chad, lo que hace necesario continuar con el monitoreo y la implementación de intervenciones orientadas a abordar este problema.
