En Arabia Saudita, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más sigue siendo una importante preocupación de salud pública. En 2022, se registraron aproximadamente 4,310,784 personas consumidoras de tabaco, lo que representa un aumento gradual respecto a las 3,211,720 en 2019. La prevalencia de consumo de tabaco en adultos fue del 16.2% en 2022, lo que muestra un leve incremento frente al 15.6% en 2020 y al 12.7% en 2019. Entre los hombres, la prevalencia fue notablemente mayor, con un 26.3% en 2022, en comparación con el 24.7% en 2020 y el 24.2% en 2019. En el caso de las mujeres, la prevalencia fue del 1.9% en 2022, reflejando un ligero aumento respecto al 1.8% en 2020 y al 1.2% en 2019. En 2019, la prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco en adultos fue del 15.2%, siendo del 24% entre los hombres y del 2% entre las mujeres. El consumo de tabaco provocó 14,238 muertes en el país en 2021, incluidos 12,174 fallecimientos masculinos, que representaron el 11.6% de todas las muertes de hombres, y 2,064 fallecimientos femeninos, correspondientes al 4.06% de todas las muertes de mujeres. En total, los fallecimientos relacionados con el consumo de tabaco constituyeron el 9.14% de todas las muertes ese año. Estas cifras evidencian el desafío persistente que representa el tabaquismo en Arabia Saudita y subrayan la necesidad de mantener intervenciones de salud pública y medidas regulatorias para reducir el impacto del consumo de tabaco en la salud de la población.
