En Catar, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos ha mostrado tendencias notables en los últimos años. En 2022, se identificaron 418,276 personas de 15 años o más como fumadoras, lo que representa un aumento considerable respecto a los 399,889 fumadores reportados en 2020 y los 318,105 en 2019. La prevalencia de tabaquismo en adultos en 2022 fue del 16.4%, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros: el 21.4% de los hombres y el 2% de las mujeres fueron reportados como fumadores actuales. En comparación, en 2020 la prevalencia fue del 20.1% entre los hombres y del 1.7% entre las mujeres, lo que indica un ligero aumento en el consumo entre mujeres en el periodo de dos años. Como referencia, la prevalencia diaria de tabaquismo en adultos en 2013 era del 9.5%, con un 16.5% en hombres y un 1.7% en mujeres. En cuanto a la mortalidad atribuible al consumo de tabaco, los datos de 2021 indican que fumar fue responsable de 401 muertes anuales, lo que representa el 7.92% del total de defunciones, con un porcentaje mayor entre los hombres (9.5%) en comparación con las mujeres (2.97%). Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el desafío constante que representa el tabaquismo para la salud pública en Catar y destacan la necesidad de implementar intervenciones específicas para reducir tanto la prevalencia como el impacto sanitario del consumo de tabaco.
