En Paraguay, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más ha mostrado una tendencia significativa en los últimos años. En 2022, la prevalencia general de tabaquismo en adultos fue de 10,6%, con una marcada diferencia entre sexos: la prevalencia en hombres fue de 17,4% y en mujeres de 3,8%. Estas cifras reflejan una disminución respecto a años anteriores, como en 2020, cuando la prevalencia fue de 11,7% en total, 18,8% en hombres y 4,4% en mujeres. La cantidad de personas fumadoras también ha bajado, pasando de 621.767 en 2019 a 540.696 en 2022. Como referencia, la prevalencia diaria de tabaquismo en adultos en 2017 fue de 9,1%, con un 14,8% en hombres y 3,2% en mujeres. Las muertes atribuibles al tabaquismo siguen representando una preocupación para la salud pública. En 2021, se estimaron 3.955 fallecimientos relacionados con el consumo de tabaco, lo que equivale al 7,77% de todas las muertes en el país. Según el sexo, se registraron 2.912 muertes entre hombres, representando el 9,76% de los fallecimientos masculinos, y 1.043 muertes entre mujeres, equivalente al 4,95% de los fallecimientos femeninos. Estas estadísticas evidencian que, a pesar de la reducción observada en la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco, el tabaquismo continúa siendo un desafío importante para la salud pública en Paraguay.
