En Madagascar, en 2022, la prevalencia de tabaquismo en adultos fue del 31,2% en hombres y del 1,2% en mujeres, con una prevalencia total del 16,1% en la población adulta. Esto representa un ligero aumento respecto a 2020, cuando la prevalencia global era del 15,8%, siendo del 30,8% en hombres y del 1,1% en mujeres. El número total de adultos fumadores en 2022 se estimó en aproximadamente 2.734.470 personas, lo que muestra un incremento frente a las 2.523.140 registradas en 2020. En 2017, la prevalencia diaria de consumo de tabaco en adultos fue del 27,7% en hombres y del 1,5% en mujeres. En cuanto a las consecuencias para la salud, el consumo de tabaco provocó 5.485 muertes en 2021, lo que representa el 2,65% del total de fallecimientos en el país. Las muertes atribuibles al tabaco constituyeron el 3,77% de las muertes masculinas (4.210 casos) y el 1,34% de las muertes femeninas (1.274 casos) en ese mismo año. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el persistente reto de salud pública que enfrenta Madagascar y subrayan la urgencia de implementar medidas efectivas para reducir la carga sanitaria asociada al tabaquismo.
