En Kuwait, el consumo de tabaco sigue representando importantes desafíos para la salud pública. En 2022, la prevalencia de tabaquismo entre adultos de 15 años o más fue del 22.7%, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros: el 35.6% de los hombres y el 2.1% de las mujeres eran fumadores. Esto supone un ligero aumento respecto a 2020, cuando las tasas de prevalencia entre hombres y mujeres fueron del 33.9% y 2.3%, respectivamente. El número total de personas fumadoras en 2022 fue de 775,144, frente a 736,502 en 2020, lo que indica una tendencia al alza. La prevalencia de tabaquismo diario entre adultos en 2022 fue de 37.3%, con un 58.9% en hombres y un 15.1% en mujeres. La mortalidad asociada al consumo de tabaco sigue siendo motivo de preocupación: el 12.83% de todas las muertes en 2021 se atribuyó al tabaquismo, incluyendo el 16.11% de las muertes en hombres y el 4.25% en mujeres. Además, el tabaco fue responsable de 1,549 fallecimientos en 2021, según estimaciones previas. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto las persistentes repercusiones del consumo de tabaco en la salud pública de Kuwait y evidencian la necesidad de mantener medidas regulatorias y preventivas para reducir la creciente prevalencia y sus consecuencias en la salud.

Reducción de daños del tabaco: un problema candente para Asia

El enfoque de este informe de GSTHR es Asia. El sesenta por ciento de los fumadores del mundo vive en esta región y aquí se produce casi la mitad de las muertes mundiales por fumar. Asia también alberga a nueve de cada diez consumidores de tabaco sin combustión (SLT), lo que provoca altas tasas de cáncer oral. En varios países, la salud pública se ve gravemente socavada cuando los gobiernos controlan o tienen una participación significativa en empresas tabacaleras nacionales. Se necesitan nuevas soluciones para abordar la amenaza para la salud pública que suponen fumar y el consumo de tabaco, pero los productos de nicotina más seguros están prohibidos en muchos países. ¿Mejoraría la reducción de daños del tabaco la salud pública en Asia?
