En Irak, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más, según estimaciones de 2022, muestra una marcada diferencia entre géneros. La tasa de prevalencia en hombres es del 36%, mientras que en mujeres es considerablemente menor, con un 1.6%. En general, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco en adultos es del 18.7%, lo que representa una ligera disminución respecto al 18.9% registrado en 2020. Se estima que el total de personas fumadoras en 2022 era de 4,801,707 individuos. En 2017, la prevalencia diaria de consumo de tabaco en adultos fue del 19.6%, con un 36.1% en hombres y un 1.8% en mujeres. Estas cifras son fundamentales para comprender el impacto del tabaquismo en la salud pública del país. En cuanto a la mortalidad asociada al consumo de tabaco, los datos de 2021 indican que el tabaquismo fue responsable del 11.71% de todas las muertes: 15.47% de los fallecimientos en hombres y 6.05% en mujeres. El número anual de muertes atribuibles al consumo de tabaco en 2021 fue de 27,305, de las cuales 21,685 correspondieron a hombres y 5,620 a mujeres. Estos datos ponen de manifiesto el desafío persistente que representa el tabaquismo y su importante repercusión en la salud pública en Irak.
