En Gambia, las estadísticas relacionadas con el tabaquismo correspondientes a 2022 ofrecen información relevante sobre la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco y sus implicaciones para la salud. La prevalencia de tabaquismo en adultos varones fue del 18.1%, mientras que en mujeres fue considerablemente menor, situándose en el 0.4%. La prevalencia total en adultos fue del 9.1%, lo que representa una leve disminución en comparación con años anteriores, como el 13.1% en 2019 y el 9.7% en 2020. El número absoluto de personas fumadoras de 15 años o más en Gambia se estimó en aproximadamente 125,948 en 2022, una ligera reducción respecto a las 126,112 de 2020 y una caída más marcada en comparación con las 166,465 registradas en 2019. Además, la prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco en adultos fue del 12.7%, con un 25.5% entre los hombres y un 0.5% entre las mujeres. Los datos de mortalidad atribuible al consumo de tabaco de 2021 señalan que 576 muertes se relacionaron con el tabaquismo, de las cuales 457 correspondieron a hombres, lo que equivale al 4.67% de todas las muertes masculinas. En contraste, las muertes asociadas al tabaquismo entre mujeres fueron 119, lo que representa el 1.52% de todas las muertes femeninas en el país. Estos datos evidencian el desafío continuo que representa el consumo de tabaco para la salud pública en Gambia, aunque se observa una disminución en las tasas de prevalencia y en el número de fumadores.
