En Cabo Verde, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más se estimó en un 7,4% en 2022, según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS). Esta cifra representa una disminución frente al 7,7% registrado en 2020. La prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre los hombres fue del 12,2%, en comparación con el 2,7% en las mujeres en 2022. El número total de personas fumadoras de tabaco en 2022 fue de aproximadamente 29.810, lo que supone una ligera disminución en relación con las 30.021 registradas en 2020. En 2020, la prevalencia diaria del consumo de tabaco en adultos fue del 4,9%, con un 8,4% en hombres y un 1,3% en mujeres. En cuanto al impacto en la salud, las muertes atribuibles al consumo de tabaco representaron el 3,75% de los fallecimientos totales en el país en 2021, lo que equivale a 137 defunciones. De ellas, 110 correspondieron a hombres y 27 a mujeres, lo que indica que la mortalidad asociada al tabaquismo afecta de manera desproporcionada a los hombres. Es fundamental mantener las medidas regulatorias y las intervenciones de salud pública en Cabo Verde para hacer frente a los retos sanitarios que supone el consumo de tabaco.
