En Côte d’Ivoire, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más sigue siendo un importante problema de salud pública. En 2022, la prevalencia general de consumo de tabaco en adultos se reportó en 8.5%, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros: 16.4% en hombres y 0.5% en mujeres. Esto representa una ligera disminución respecto a las cifras de 2020, cuando la prevalencia era de 9.4% en general, 18% en hombres y 0.6% en mujeres. Se estima que el número de fumadores de tabaco en 2022 fue de 1,333,795, lo que muestra una baja frente a los 1,393,511 de 2020 y los 1,804,938 de 2019. En 2017, la prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco en adultos fue de 26.2% en hombres y 1.7% en mujeres. La mortalidad relacionada con el consumo de tabaco sigue representando un problema grave en el país, con 5,409 fallecimientos en 2021, lo que equivale al 2.59% de todas las muertes; de estas, 4,399 correspondieron a hombres y 1,011 a mujeres, lo que pone de manifiesto el impacto diferenciado por género en la salud. Estos datos destacan la necesidad urgente de implementar estrategias eficaces contra el tabaquismo en Côte d’Ivoire para reducir su prevalencia y los efectos negativos asociados en la salud.
