En 2022, Bután registró una prevalencia de consumo de tabaco para fumar del 6.9% entre la población adulta de 15 años o más. La prevalencia desglosada por género indica que el 2.7% de las mujeres y el 10.6% de los hombres eran fumadores en ese año, lo que equivale aproximadamente a 40,314 personas. Como referencia, la prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco en adultos en 2017 fue del 4.3%, con un 6% en hombres y un 2.1% en mujeres. En relación con la mortalidad atribuible al tabaquismo, los datos de 2021 muestran que hubo 329 muertes relacionadas con el consumo de tabaco, lo que representa el 7.43% de todas las muertes en el país. Esto incluye 248 muertes entre hombres, que corresponden al 10.3% de las muertes masculinas, y 81 muertes entre mujeres, que representan el 4.02% de las muertes femeninas. El enfoque de este informe de GSTHR es Asia. El sesenta por ciento de los fumadores del mundo vive en esta región y aquí se produce casi la mitad de las muertes mundiales por fumar. Asia también alberga a nueve de cada diez consumidores de tabaco sin combustión (SLT), lo que provoca altas tasas de cáncer oral. En varios países, la salud pública se ve gravemente socavada cuando los gobiernos controlan o tienen una participación significativa en empresas tabacaleras nacionales. Se necesitan nuevas soluciones para abordar la amenaza para la salud pública que suponen fumar y el consumo de tabaco, pero los productos de nicotina más seguros están prohibidos en muchos países. ¿Mejoraría la reducción de daños del tabaco la salud pública en Asia?
