En Benín, la prevalencia de consumo de tabaco en adultos de 15 años o más se estimó en un 4% en 2022. Esta prevalencia muestra diferencias significativas entre géneros, con un 6,9% en hombres y un 1,2% en mujeres. Estas cifras reflejan una disminución respecto a años anteriores; en 2020, la prevalencia de consumo de tabaco fue del 7,3% en hombres y del 1,2% en mujeres. El número absoluto de fumadores de tabaco en Benín se estimó en 287,707 en 2022, lo que representa un ligero aumento respecto a los 284,115 registrados en 2020, pero una disminución respecto a los 393,262 de 2019. En 2018, la prevalencia diaria de consumo de tabaco en adultos fue del 5,4%, con un 6,9% en hombres y un 1,4% en mujeres. En Benín, las muertes atribuibles al consumo de tabaco representaron el 1,23% del total de decesos en 2021, con un impacto mayor en hombres (1,7%) frente a mujeres (0,63%). El número total de fallecimientos asociados al consumo de tabaco en 2021 fue de 1,282, con 988 muertes en hombres y 294 en mujeres. Estas estadísticas ponen de manifiesto los retos que plantea el consumo de tabaco para la salud pública en Benín, así como las diferencias de género en los patrones de consumo y sus consecuencias para la salud.
