En Burundi, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco presenta cifras destacadas, especialmente entre la población adulta. En 2022, aproximadamente 500,877 personas de 15 años o más fumaban tabaco. La prevalencia entre los hombres fue del 13.6%, mientras que entre las mujeres fue considerablemente menor, situándose en 1.7%, lo que resultó en una prevalencia general del 7.5% en adultos ese mismo año. En comparación, las tasas de prevalencia para hombres y mujeres en 2020 fueron del 13.5% y 1.9% respectivamente, lo que señala un ligero aumento entre los hombres y una disminución entre las mujeres. En 2021, la prevalencia diaria del consumo de tabaco en adultos fue del 8%, con un 15.8% entre los hombres y apenas 0.5% entre las mujeres. Los efectos del tabaco en la salud son significativos en el país. En 2021, se atribuyeron al consumo de tabaco 2,007 muertes, de las cuales 1,714 correspondieron a hombres y 293 a mujeres. Esto representó el 2.06% del total de fallecimientos en el país, con un porcentaje mayor en los varones (3.04%) en comparación con las mujeres (0.72%). Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto tanto el impacto sanitario del tabaquismo como su marcada disparidad de género en Burundi.
