W Burundi rozpowszechnienie palenia tytoniu jest szczególnie widoczne wśród dorosłej populacji. Według danych z 2022 roku, liczba osób palących tytoń w wieku 15 lat i starszych wynosiła około 500 877. Odsetek palaczy wśród mężczyzn wynosił 13,6%, podczas gdy wśród kobiet był znacznie niższy i wynosił 1,7%, co przełożyło się na ogólną częstość palenia wśród dorosłych na poziomie 7,5% w tym samym roku. Dla porównania, w 2020 roku wskaźniki te wynosiły odpowiednio 13,5% dla mężczyzn i 1,9% dla kobiet, co wskazuje na niewielki wzrost wśród mężczyzn i spadek wśród kobiet. W 2021 roku codzienne palenie tytoniu wśród dorosłych miało częstość 8%, przy czym odsetek palących mężczyzn wynosił 15,8%, a kobiet 0,5%. Skutki zdrowotne palenia w kraju są znaczące. W 2021 roku odnotowano 2 007 zgonów związanych z paleniem tytoniu, w tym 1 714 wśród mężczyzn i 293 wśród kobiet. Stanowiło to 2,06% wszystkich zgonów w kraju, przy czym odsetek ten był wyższy wśród mężczyzn – 3,04% w porównaniu do 0,72% u kobiet. Dane te podkreślają wpływ palenia tytoniu na zdrowie publiczne oraz zróżnicowanie tego problemu w zależności od płci w Burundi.
