En Ruanda, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más en 2022 se estimó en 8,6%, según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS). En comparación, esta prevalencia fue de 9,9% en 2020. Desglosado por sexo, en 2022 el 14,4% de los hombres y el 3,1% de las mujeres eran fumadores. En 2020, la prevalencia fue del 15,4% entre hombres y del 4,7% entre mujeres. Esto indica que el número total de fumadores en 2022 se estimó en 688.622, lo que representa una disminución respecto a los 747.687 registrados en 2020. La prevalencia de fumadores diarios entre adultos en 2021 fue de 5,7%, con un 8,2% en hombres y un 3,1% en mujeres. En cuanto al impacto en la salud, la mortalidad atribuible al consumo de tabaco en 2021 representó el 5,16% de todas las muertes en el país, con un 6,11% entre hombres y un 4,1% entre mujeres. El número anual de muertes atribuibles al tabaquismo fue de 4.758, de las cuales 2.967 correspondieron a hombres y 1.791 a mujeres. Estos datos reflejan el desafío constante para la salud pública que representa el consumo de tabaco en Ruanda, a pesar de ciertos avances en la reducción de las tasas de prevalencia en los últimos años.
