The overall smoking prevalence in Slovenia has gone down slightly since 2006. 22.7% of the adult population in Slovenia are current smokers, down from 23% in 2006, though this figure did rise to 30% in 2012. This means there are now approximately 400,816 smokers in the country. 25.1% of men smoke and for women the figure is 20.3%.
The most recent data show there were 2,633 annual deaths attributable to tobacco smoking (approximately 774 women and 1,900 men). The annual percentage of all deaths attributable to tobacco smoking was 15.14% (women: 7.3%; and men: 18.4%).
Nicotine vapes (e-cigarettes) are legal in Slovenia and there are 26,200 vapers in the country, giving an adult vaping prevalence of 1.48%. There is a requirement to ensure vape packaging contains a health warning, and they can only be sold to those 18 and older. Vaping devices can be purchased without a prescription but there are legal restrictions on their use in public places.
Heated tobacco products are legal and can be marketed, but the situation is a bit more complicated for snus. While it is illegal to import snus for trade or buy the product online, it is possible to import it for personal use.
Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) can be marketed and it is available to buy in pharmacies. The NRT market in Slovenia is worth €800,000.

Slovenia abides by the EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) (2014). E-cigarettes are regulated by the Restriction on the Use of Tobacco or Tobacco-related Products Act (ZOUTPI) 2017, which classifies e-cigarettes as tobacco related products. Article 26 covers e-cigarettes. A license to sell tobacco related products must be acquired before vendors can sell e-cigarettes. There is a ban on cross-border and internet sales, and a complete ban on advertising. There are restrictions on vaping in public places, on public transport and in a vehicle where a minor (<18 years) is present. In 2016 Slovenia introduced a tax of €0.18 (US$0.21) per ml of e-liquid, resulting in the addition of €1.80 to the price of a 10 ml bottle of juice.
