In the Solomon Islands, tobacco smoking remains a significant public health concern. As of 2022, the adult smoking prevalence was estimated to be 37.6%, with a gender-specific prevalence of 55.3% among males and 19.6% among females. This represents a slight decrease in overall prevalence from 38% in 2020. The total number of smokers aged 15 years and older was approximately 157,668 in 2022, showing an increase from 150,965 in 2020. For reference, the adult daily smoking prevalence in 2017 was 29.7%, with a prevalence of 43.4% among males and 15.3% among females.
Smoking-related mortality is also a critical public health issue. In 2021, 728 deaths were attributed to smoking. Of these, 535 deaths were among males and 192 among females. This indicates that the percentage of all deaths attributable to smoking was 15.97%, with a higher proportion among males (20.22%) compared to females (10.08%). These statistics underscore the ongoing challenge posed by tobacco smoking in the Solomon Islands, necessitating targeted public health interventions and regulatory measures to curb smoking rates and reduce associated health impacts.
