En las Islas Salomón, el consumo de tabaco sigue siendo una preocupación importante de salud pública. En 2022, se estimó que la prevalencia de tabaquismo en adultos era del 37.6%, con una prevalencia específica por género del 55.3% en hombres y del 19.6% en mujeres. Esto representa una ligera disminución en la prevalencia general respecto al 38% registrado en 2020. El número total de fumadores de 15 años o más fue aproximadamente 157,668 en 2022, lo que muestra un aumento en comparación con los 150,965 de 2020. Como referencia, la prevalencia diaria de tabaquismo en adultos en 2017 era del 29.7%, con un 43.4% en hombres y un 15.3% en mujeres. La mortalidad atribuida al tabaquismo también constituye un grave problema de salud pública. En 2021, se atribuyeron 728 muertes al consumo de tabaco, de las cuales 535 correspondieron a hombres y 192 a mujeres. Esto indica que el porcentaje de todas las muertes atribuibles al tabaquismo fue del 15.97%, con una proporción mayor entre hombres (20.22%) que entre mujeres (10.08%). Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el desafío persistente que representa el tabaquismo en las Islas Salomón, lo que hace necesario adoptar intervenciones de salud pública y medidas regulatorias específicas para reducir las tasas de consumo y mitigar los impactos negativos en la salud.
