Despite a decrease in tobacco smoking impacts in Gabon in recent years, the statistics for the prevalence as well as deaths from smoking indicate a significant public health concern. The number of deaths due to smoking in 2021 was reported to be 501. This figure includes 77 deaths among females and 423 among males. Mortality due to tobacco smoking accounted for 3.22% of all deaths in Gabon in 2021, with 1.16% among females and 4.77% among males. This shows a slight decrease over recent years as the total number of smoking-related deaths in 2016 was reported to be 569. The percentage of all deaths attributable to smoking was slightly higher in 2016 at 4.56%, with male deaths at 5.4% and female deaths at 2.8%. In terms of prevalence, the adult daily smoking prevalence in 2017 was 22.4% among males and 3.4% among females. These statistics underscore the ongoing burden of tobacco smoking in Gabon, particularly among males, and highlight the importance of continuing public health interventions to address this issue.
