In Brunei, smoking is legal and regulations exist around tobacco. Cigarettes can legally be sold, and smoking is permitted. Cigarettes are allowed to be purchased online, but they cannot be bought from vending machines. Additionally, health warnings are required on cigarette packaging, the minimum legal age for purchase is 18 years, and there are legal restrictions on smoking in public places.

Despite these control measures, smoking is a public health concern in Brunei. In 2024, there were approximately 57,000 current adult smokers in the country. This shows that the adult current smoking prevalence in 2024 was 15.8%, with a much higher rate among males (27.8%) than among females (2.1%). This prevalence was 17.1% overall in 2022. In 2021, smoking led to an estimated 206 deaths in Brunei, including 159 deaths among males and 47 among females. This number indicates that, smoking resulted in 11.25% of all deaths in the country, including 15.51% of all male deaths and 5.83% of all female deaths. These figures show that smoking continues to have a negative impact on health in Brunei.
