In Austria, e-cigarettes are legal with certain regulatory framework. Under these regulations, the sale of e-cigarette products and nicotine liquids is legal, and they can be obtained through general retail channels. However, purchasing them online is not allowed. Notifications for new products, child-resistant containers, and health warnings on packaging are mandatory. The minimum legal age for purchasing e-cigarettes is 18 years. There are also restrictions on nicotine content and tank size, and the use of e-cigarettes is legally restricted in certain public places. However, there are no restrictions on flavours. Moreover, health claims are not allowed. But there is no excise tax applied to e-cigarette products.
In terms of prevalence, Austria had an estimated 307,000 current vapers in 2023. The adult current e-cigarette vaping prevalence was 4%, with 4.5% among males and 2.2% among females (based on data from 2020). The adult daily vaping prevalence was estimated to be 0.9% in 2025, with 1.3% among males and 0.5% among females. In a survey conducted in 2017, 21% of adults stated they ever tried e-cigarette vaping.
