In Armenia, the prevalence of tobacco smoking among the adult population aged 15 years and older was recorded to be 22.5% in 2022, according to the World Health Organization's estimates. Specifically, the prevalence of smoking among males was notably higher at 49.3%, while among females it was significantly lower at 1.7%. The total number of smokers in 2022 was approximately 521,658 individuals. This represents a decrease from 2020, when the smoking prevalence was 24% and the number of smokers was 554,413. For reference, the adult daily smoking prevalence in 2017 was 21.6%, with a prevalence of 46.4% among males and 1.2% among females.
Smoking-related mortality data from 2021 indicate that smoking resulted in 16.22% of all deaths in the country, corresponding to a total of 5,083 deaths. Of these deaths, 4,337 were males and 746 were females, translating to 26.28% of male deaths and 5.03% of female deaths. These data underscore the significant public health challenge posed by tobacco smoking in Armenia, particularly among the male population.
