In the Maldives, the prevalence of tobacco smoking among individuals aged 15 years and older in 2024 was estimated to be 28.8%, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). A detailed breakdown shows that the prevalence of smoking among males was significantly higher with 43.3%, compared to 3.2% among females. The number of smokers was recorded to be 120,000 individuals in the same year. The adult daily smoking prevalence in 2021 was reported to be 20.1%, with 33.5% among males and 3.5% among females.
The data also show that 203 deaths attributable to tobacco smoking was reported in 2021, which represented 12.8% of all deaths in the country. Among these, 165 deaths were males, and 37 were females. This represents that smoking-related mortality rate among males was 16.68%, while among females, it was 6.32%. These statistics highlight the gender disparity in smoking prevalence and the health burden posed by tobacco smoking in the Maldives.
