В Южной Африке по состоянию на 2021 год насчитывалось примерно 920 000 человек, которые курят электронные сигареты, при этом распространённость использования среди взрослых составляла 2,2% — 0,7% среди женщин и 3,8% среди мужчин. Эти данные свидетельствуют о наличии электронных сигарет в стране, хотя насколько они широко распространены, остаётся неясным. Электронные сигареты разрешены и регулируются как лекарственные средства: приобрести их можно по рецепту в аптеках, но онлайн-покупки для личного пользования не допускаются. Хотя продажа никотина легальна, на упаковке требуется медицинское предупреждение о вреде для здоровья, а также установлен минимальный возраст для покупки — 18 лет. Кроме того, использование электронных сигарет ограничено в общественных местах. В то же время неясно, разрешён ли ввоз электронных сигарет для личного пользования путешественниками.
