В Мавритании в последние годы наблюдаются заметные тенденции в потреблении табака среди взрослых. По состоянию на 2024 год распространённость курения среди людей в возрасте 15 лет и старше оценивается в 9,2%, при этом сохраняется значительный гендерный разрыв: среди мужчин этот показатель составляет 17%, а среди женщин — 2%. Это отражает незначительное снижение по сравнению с 2020 годом, когда общая доля курящих составляла 8,8%, среди мужчин — 16,3%, а среди женщин — 1,4%. Число тех, кто курит в 2024 году, составило примерно 270 000 человек, увеличившись с 238 080 в 2020 году. Для сравнения, в 2017 году ежедневное курение среди взрослых встречалось у 12,8% населения: у мужчин показатель был 23,2%, а у женщин — 3,2%. Данные по причинам смертности, связанным с курением, также важны: в 2021 году доля всех смертей, обусловленных курением, составила 3,32% — среди мужчин 4,29% и среди женщин 2,22%. Общее число смертей из-за курения в тот год составило 832 (572 мужчины и 259 женщин), тогда как в 2016 году этот показатель был выше и составлял 932. Эти данные подчёркивают, что курение табака по-прежнему остаётся серьёзной проблемой общественного здоровья в Мавритании, требующей постоянных усилий в области охраны здоровья для снижения негативного влияния на население.
