W Mauretanii w ostatnich latach obserwuje się wyraźne tendencje dotyczące palenia tytoniu wśród dorosłych. Według szacunków z 2022 roku odsetek dorosłych palaczy w wieku 15 lat i starszych wynosił 7,9%, przy czym występuje znacząca różnica między płciami. Odsetek palących wśród mężczyzn był znacznie wyższy i wynosił 14,8%, podczas gdy wśród kobiet odnotowano jedynie 1,4%. Oznacza to niewielki spadek w porównaniu z 2020 rokiem, gdy ogólny odsetek palących wynosił 8,8%, w tym 16,3% wśród mężczyzn i 1,4% wśród kobiet. Liczbę palaczy w 2022 roku szacowano na około 226 788 osób, co oznacza spadek w porównaniu do 238 080 osób w 2020 roku. Dla porównania, w 2017 roku codzienne palenie tytoniu wśród dorosłych wynosiło 12,8% – 23,2% wśród mężczyzn i 3,2% wśród kobiet. Istotne dane dotyczą także umieralności związanej z paleniem – w 2021 roku odsetek wszystkich zgonów przypisywanych paleniu tytoniu wyniósł 3,32%, z czego mężczyźni stanowili 4,29%, a kobiety 2,22%. Łączna liczba zgonów spowodowanych paleniem wyniosła 832, w tym 572 mężczyzn i 259 kobiet. Oznacza to spadek w porównaniu z 2016 rokiem, kiedy odnotowano 932 takie zgony. Dane te podkreślają, że palenie tytoniu wciąż stanowi poważne wyzwanie zdrowia publicznego w Mauretanii, co wymaga kontynuowania działań profilaktycznych mających na celu ograniczenie jego negatywnych skutków zdrowotnych.
