В Лесото за последние годы распространённость курения табака среди взрослого населения претерпела значительные колебания. По данным на 2024 год, распространённость среди взрослых, употребляющих табачные изделия в настоящее время, оценивалась в 21,3 %, при выраженной разнице между мужчинами и женщинами: 42,7 % среди мужчин и 1,5 % среди женщин. Это свидетельствует о небольшом увеличении по сравнению с 2020 годом, когда общий показатель составлял 19,1 %, среди мужчин — 38,6 %, среди женщин — 0,4 %. В 2024 году количество людей в возрасте 15 лет и старше, которые курят, было примерно 323 000, тогда как в 2020 году эта цифра составляла 269 025. Для справки: в 2017 году ежедневная распространённость курения среди взрослых составляла 20,6 %, при этом 41,6 % среди мужчин и 30 % среди женщин. Смертность, связанная с курением, также остаётся серьёзной проблемой общественного здравоохранения — в 2021 году зафиксировано 2168 случаев смерти, что соответствует 5,73 % всех смертей. В том числе 1675 случаев среди мужчин и 493 — среди женщин, что отражает гендерные показатели смертности — 8,35 % среди мужчин и 2,77 % среди женщин. Эти данные подчёркивают сохраняющуюся проблему употребления табака в Лесото и необходимость целенаправленных мер общественного здравоохранения для снижения его негативного воздействия на здоровье населения.
