В Гамбии данные по употреблению табака дают важное представление о распространённости курения и связанных с ним последствиях для здоровья. В 2024 году распространённость текущего курения табака среди взрослых мужчин составила 18,1%, тогда как среди женщин этот показатель был значительно ниже и составлял всего 0,4%. В целом, уровень курения среди взрослого населения достиг 9,5% в 2024 году, что свидетельствует о небольшом снижении по сравнению с предыдущими годами: 13,1% в 2019 году и 9,7% в 2020 году. Абсолютное число тех, кто курит и старше 15 лет, составило около 155 000 человек в 2024 году, что отражает небольшой рост по сравнению со 126 112 в 2020 году и снижение по сравнению с 166 465 в 2019 году. Для справки: ежедневная распространённость курения среди взрослых составляла 12,7% в 2017 году, при этом среди мужчин — 25,5%, а среди женщин — 0,5%. По данным о смертности, связанной с курением, в 2021 году было зафиксировано 576 случаев смерти, обусловленных употреблением табака, из которых на мужчин приходилось 457 случаев (4,67% всех случаев смерти среди мужчин). Для женщин показатель составил 119 смертей, что эквивалентно 1,52% всех смертей среди женщин в стране. Эти данные подчёркивают сохраняющуюся проблему для общественного здравоохранения, обусловленную употреблением табака в Гамбии, несмотря на заметное снижение распространённости курения и общего числа курящих.
