В материковом Китае импорт, экспорт, продажа, хранение и использование электронных сигарет являются легальными. Вейпинг широко распространён в крупных городах, однако местные законы, например в Шанхае или Шэньчжэне, запрещают использование электронных сигарет в зонах, где курение не допускается. В Макао продажа электронных сигарет запрещена, но сам вейпинг остаётся легальным. Существует ряд общественных мест, где вейпинг запрещён вне зависимости от того, содержит устройство никотин или нет, и нарушение этих ограничений может повлечь штраф в размере около 190 долларов. В мае 2019 года Всемирная торговая организация (ВТО) объявила, что Китай разработал стандарты регулирования электронных сигарет и предоставил их в ВТО, однако сроки их принятия пока не уточняются. Стандарты определяют термины и определения, технические требования, методы испытаний, упаковку, защищённую от детей, маркировку, инструкции, условия хранения и транспортировки электронных сигарет.
