Na Tajwanie palenie tytoniu jest dozwolone, choć obowiązują pewne ograniczenia. Sprzedaż papierosów jest legalna, jednak nie można ich kupować przez internet ani w automatach. Papierosy mogą być importowane w celach handlowych pod warunkiem posiadania odpowiedniej licencji. Opakowania muszą zawierać ostrzeżenia zdrowotne, a minimalny wiek uprawniający do zakupu papierosów wynosi 20 lat. Nie istnieją prawne ograniczenia dotyczące palenia w miejscach publicznych. W 2020 roku szacowana liczba palących w Tajwanie wynosiła 2,7 miliona osób, a odsetek dorosłych palaczy sięgał 13,1%. W grupie mężczyzn częstość palenia wynosiła 23,1%, natomiast wśród kobiet – 2,9%. W tym samym roku szacowano, że liczba zgonów przypisywanych paleniu tytoniu wynosiła 25,4 tysiąca, w tym 22,9 tysiąca mężczyzn i 2,5 tysiąca kobiet. Oznacza to, że palenie przyczyniło się do 13,79% wszystkich zgonów, w tym do 21,26% zgonów mężczyzn oraz 3,25% zgonów kobiet w kraju.
