W Kazachstanie palenie tytoniu pozostaje poważnym problemem zdrowia publicznego. W 2022 roku w kraju było około 2,8 miliona osób palących nałogowo. Odsetek dorosłych palaczy wynosił 21,4%, przy wyraźnej różnicy między płciami: 6,3% wśród kobiet i 38,3% wśród mężczyzn. Śmiertelność związana z paleniem jest również wysoka. W 2021 roku palenie tytoniu spowodowało szacunkowo 15 100 zgonów, w tym 2 400 wśród kobiet i 12 700 wśród mężczyzn. Oznacza to, że palenie tytoniu odpowiadało za 8,3% wszystkich zgonów w kraju, z czego 2,83% dotyczyło kobiet, a 12,92% mężczyzn w tym roku. Kazachstan wprowadza szereg regulacji dotyczących wyrobów tytoniowych. Sprzedaż papierosów jest dozwolona, ale podlega określonym ograniczeniom. Zabronione są reklama, promocja oraz sprzedaż papierosów przez internet i automaty sprzedające. Minimalny wiek uprawniający do zakupu to 21 lat, a także obowiązują ograniczenia dotyczące palenia w miejscach publicznych. Na opakowaniach papierosów muszą znajdować się ostrzeżenia zdrowotne, a ogólna stawka podatku na wyroby tytoniowe wynosi 50%.
