W Malezji papierosy są legalnie sprzedawane, palone i importowane, jednak ich zakup z automatów lub przez internet jest zabroniony. Ostrzeżenia zdrowotne na opakowaniach są obowiązkowe, natomiast brak jest prawnych ograniczeń dotyczących palenia w miejscach publicznych. Całkowita stawka opodatkowania wyrobów tytoniowych wynosi 0,52. Palenie tytoniu pozostaje powszechne – w 2022 roku odnotowano około 5,2 miliona osób aktualnie palących, co stanowiło 20,9% dorosłych; w tym odsetek palących kobiet wyniósł 0,5%, a mężczyzn 40,8%. W 2021 roku liczba zgonów związanych z paleniem sięgnęła około 24 100, co stanowiło 10,75% wszystkich zgonów – 15,03% wśród mężczyzn i 4,44% wśród kobiet.
