En Sierra Leona, la prevalencia de consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más en 2022 se estimó en 10%, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros: el 16.4% de los hombres y el 3.6% de las mujeres eran fumadores. El número total de personas que consumían tabaco en el país era de aproximadamente 482,262. Según datos de 2021, el consumo de tabaco provocó 1,964 muertes, lo que representó el 2.48% de todas las defunciones en el país. De estas muertes, 1,437 correspondieron a hombres, equivalente al 3.36% de todas las muertes masculinas, y 528 a mujeres, lo que representó el 1.45% de las muertes femeninas. En 2019, la prevalencia de tabaquismo era del 19.8%, con el 31% entre los hombres y el 8.5% entre las mujeres, y el número de fumadores rondaba los 881,250. En 2017, la prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco en adultos fue de 19.4%, con un 33.1% entre los hombres y un 6.2% entre las mujeres. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el persistente problema de salud pública que representa el consumo de tabaco en Sierra Leona, a pesar de la reducción en la prevalencia y el número de muertes atribuibles a este hábito.
