El consumo de tabaco sigue siendo un problema importante de salud pública en Níger. En 2022, la prevalencia general de tabaquismo en adultos de 15 años o más se informó en 6,4%. La prevalencia fue notablemente mayor en hombres, con un 12,1%, en comparación con las mujeres, que registraron un 0,5%. El número total de personas que fumaban en Níger se estimó en aproximadamente 805,070 en ese mismo año. En comparación, en 2020 la prevalencia de tabaquismo en adultos fue ligeramente inferior, situándose en 6,3%. En 2021, la prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco en adultos fue de 4,7%, con una tasa mayor en hombres (8,7%) que en mujeres (0,1%). En cuanto a la mortalidad, en 2021 se atribuyeron al consumo de tabaco 2,250 muertes anuales, lo que representa el 1,09% de todos los fallecimientos en el país. Las muertes relacionadas con el tabaquismo fueron más altas entre los hombres, representando el 1,46% de todas las muertes masculinas, frente al 0,66% de las muertes femeninas. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el reto constante que supone el consumo de tabaco en Níger y resaltan la necesidad de intervenciones eficaces en salud pública para reducir la tasa de tabaquismo y los riesgos asociados para la salud.
