En Namibia, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más, según la Organización Mundial de la Salud, fue del 11,2% en 2022. Esta prevalencia fue considerablemente mayor en hombres, con un 19,2%, en comparación con el 4% en mujeres. En términos absolutos, se estimó que aproximadamente 181,242 personas en Namibia fumaban en 2022. Al comparar con años anteriores, se observa una leve disminución respecto al 11,7% registrado en 2020. En 2017, la prevalencia de fumadores diarios en la población adulta fue del 17,2%, con un 27,6% en hombres y un 7,7% en mujeres. El número anual de muertes atribuibles al tabaquismo en 2021 fue de 1,100, de las cuales 388 correspondieron a mujeres y 712 a hombres. Estas muertes relacionadas con el tabaco representaron el 4,1% del total de defunciones en el país, con porcentajes específicos de 3,24% para mujeres y 4,8% para hombres. Estas cifras evidencian el desafío constante que representa el consumo de tabaco para la salud pública en Namibia, lo que hace imprescindible mantener los esfuerzos orientados a mitigar sus impactos en la salud.
