En Maldivas, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre personas de 15 años o más en 2022 se estimó en un 26,6%, según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS). Un desglose detallado muestra que la prevalencia entre los hombres fue significativamente mayor, con un 43,6%, frente al 3,7% entre las mujeres. Ese mismo año, se registraron 113,414 fumadores. En 2021, la prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco en adultos fue del 20,1%, con un 33,5% en hombres y un 3,5% en mujeres. Los datos también indican que en 2021 se reportaron 203 muertes atribuibles al consumo de tabaco, lo que representa el 12,8% del total de fallecimientos en el país; de estos, 165 correspondieron a hombres y 37 a mujeres. Esto implica que la tasa de mortalidad relacionada con el tabaquismo fue del 16,68% en hombres y del 6,32% en mujeres. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto la disparidad de género en la prevalencia del tabaquismo y la carga sanitaria que supone el consumo de tabaco en Maldivas.

El enfoque de este informe de GSTHR es Asia. El sesenta por ciento de los fumadores del mundo vive en esta región y aquí se produce casi la mitad de las muertes mundiales por fumar. Asia también alberga a nueve de cada diez consumidores de tabaco sin combustión (SLT), lo que provoca altas tasas de cáncer oral. En varios países, la salud pública se ve gravemente socavada cuando los gobiernos controlan o tienen una participación significativa en empresas tabacaleras nacionales. Se necesitan nuevas soluciones para abordar la amenaza para la salud pública que suponen fumar y el consumo de tabaco, pero los productos de nicotina más seguros están prohibidos en muchos países. ¿Mejoraría la reducción de daños del tabaco la salud pública en Asia?
