En Lesotho, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos ha mostrado variaciones significativas en los últimos años. En 2022, se estimó que el 19.3% de la población adulta fumaba, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros: 39.2% en hombres y 0.4% en mujeres. Esto representa un ligero aumento respecto a 2020, cuando la prevalencia general era del 19.1%, con 38.6% en hombres y 0.4% en mujeres. El número de fumadores de 15 años o más fue de aproximadamente 277,466 en 2022, mientras que en 2020 era de 269,025. Como referencia, la prevalencia diaria de consumo de tabaco en adultos en 2017 fue del 20.6%, con un 41.6% en hombres y 30% en mujeres. La mortalidad atribuida al tabaquismo también representa un importante desafío para la salud pública, registrándose 2,168 muertes en 2021, lo que corresponde al 5.73% de todos los fallecimientos. De estas muertes, 1,675 fueron hombres y 493 mujeres, lo que refleja tasas específicas de mortalidad del 8.35% para los hombres y 2.77% para las mujeres. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el reto persistente que representa el consumo de tabaco en Lesotho y la necesidad de implementar intervenciones de salud pública enfocadas para reducir su impacto en la salud.
