En Libia, el consumo de tabaco sigue siendo un importante problema de salud pública. En 2021, el tabaquismo causó 4,776 muertes en el país, de las cuales 4,016 correspondieron a hombres y 760 a mujeres. Estas muertes representaron el 10.29% de todos los fallecimientos, con un 14.67% de las muertes masculinas y un 3.99% de las femeninas atribuibles al consumo de tabaco. En comparación con 2016, esto supone un aumento notable en el número total de muertes relacionadas con el tabaco, que ese año fue de 3,620, con 3,130 en hombres y 490 en mujeres. El porcentaje de todas las muertes atribuibles al consumo de tabaco disminuyó del 18.12% en 2016 al 10.29% en 2021. Las tasas de prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco en adultos en 2009 se reportaron en un 47.6% para los hombres y un 0.1% para las mujeres, lo que pone de manifiesto una tasa significativamente mayor entre la población masculina. Estos datos resaltan la necesidad crítica de mantener las intervenciones y medidas regulatorias de salud pública para mitigar el impacto nocivo del consumo de tabaco en la salud pública en Libia.
